Pioneer Cabin DAR Historical Marker Dedication
September 11, 2020
Reeder's Alley, Helena, MT

Oro Fino Chapter Regent Veronica Bovee-Anderson led members and guests in dedicating a DAR marker at Pioneer Cabin on Last Chance Gulch at 101 Reeder’s Alley, followed by a catered tea celebration in the back yard on a beautiful fall day in September. Inspired by family stories of her great-great-grandparents, Wesley and Elizabeth Binko, who immigrated from Germany and staked in 1875 a mining claim up the gulch from the cabin, and by the historic preservation work of three former chapter regents honored on the marker, Bovee-Anderson led current chapter members in planning and raising $2,500 to pay for the marker and the event.
Recognized on the Pioneer Cabin bronze plaque for their work preserving the historic cabin and then organizing the Last Chance Gulch Restoration Association are former Montana First Lady Grace Vance Erickson, who later also served as Oro Fino Chapter Regent from 1941 – 1942, and two other chapter regents, Katherine Prescott Towle (1951-1952, 1955-1956) and Lottie Ramsey Willett (1932-1933) and the support of the Helena Chamber of Commerce.  Erickson served as first president of the association, which raised funds to purchase the property in 1939 and held title to the property until 2006.
